Chile has been deeply wounded by Pinochet’s dictatorship and its brutal repression. Many families are still searching for the remaining 1210 “detenidos desaparecidos” (missing detainees) whose faces are now displayed at Santiago’s Memory museum.
During the recent social uprising many people felt history was repeating itself, with protesters getting arrested and being found dead days later, reports of torture rooms in metro stations, videos of people screeming their name and ID number while being forced into police custody. The fear was widespread and deep.
“Dónde están?” is a series of digitally woven pieces based on photographs of people getting illegally arrested in Chile in the past few years. The scene itself is half lost in the encoding of the thread which invites the spectator, as a witness, to take a step back to grasp the intensity of the scene.
