Following long periods of questioning about belonging, I seem to always come back to connection: as in human relationships and to the land. Nina 2023 works to honour the links in a deep friendship and the environments we each move through.
My inspiration began with my desire to create a visual representation of connections through double exposure analog photography. I co-created these images by shooting an entire roll of film myself and then giving it to Nina to shoot over. The double exposure photographs not only show our different relationships to our environment but also merge our vision and our lives into one narrative. A visual representation of what it's like to see through our eyes collectively.
A connection needs to be created, nurtured, valorized. Links intertwine like woven cloth. Based on the French metaphor “Tisser des liens” (to weave links) I physically engage with this connection further, intertwining threads, visions, weft, thoughts, and warp through a long meditative process in order to create a cloth that is the materialization of human relationship. I use the time-demanding process of weaving as a vessel through which I explore the sense of belonging as a composite of relationships and ways of seeing.
A sound piece completes the woven piece. Our conversations, punctuated by the sounds of the beater, invade the room and guide the spectators through the intimacy of this narrative.
